Cutting the Lotuff Leather Bucket Shoulder Bag

This week, we’re getting started on the first official round of Bucket Shoulder Bags! New for the season, this carefully designed piece is unlike any bag we’ve done before and the answer to all your wildest color-blocking dreams.

Things are kicked off at the cutting table, where our artisans use a template to mark off where each piece will be cut from a hide. But because these bucket bags use four complementary colors, this task is made a little tougher than usual. We normally cut a bag’s largest pieces from the same hide in order to easily keep the grain consistent; here, though, it’s necessary to find hides in each color that are just as smooth or pebbled as the next. Four times the effort is required for it all to look perfect!

Once the dies have been positioned in a way that will generate a uniform grain and minimal amounts of scrap, they’re “clicked” with a press. Then, the cut pieces are matched with their new soulmates. They’ll soon go on to be split, laminated, and stitched. A story for another day.
