The Essentials:   Sézane

Sézane June pants and the Flare jean

“Isn’t it spring yet?” I ask myself as a snowy gust crescendoes past the window. Clearly not. But that doesn’t mean dreams of diaphanous sundresses or rosy tonal-blocked ensembles are off the table, and lately, Sézane’s designs have been my go-to reverie when things get a little too cold.

Sketches and mood boards from the Sézane design team

Founder Morgane Sézalory launched the brand in 2013 as a way to bring beautifully vintage-inspired, expertly-made clothing to women in France and beyond. Think of walking into a tucked-away shop and finally spotting the perfect pair of 1970s jeans you’ve been coveting for months: that’s the celebratory feeling Sézalory hopes to rouse with each new collection. And she succeeds, if the recent 30,000 person waitlist for a certain cardigan is anything to go by.

Rest assured that there’s no issue of quantity over quality, either. In her own words, “The way we create our collections has always been at the heart of our responsibilities. Our ateliers are chosen for their expertise, working conditions and the origins of the fabrics...everything needs to make sense.”

Sézane Aure and Annae dresses

From the flared June pants to the silky Aure and Anabella dresses, I’m a tiny bit obsessed. All of Sézane’s pieces are understated while quietly announcing their elegance—the kind of ageless clothes you imagine wearing forever because they’ll just never not look good. So until this chilly weather is finally behind us, I’ll be here, wishing for the day when I can trade coats and corduroys for Sézane’s lovely creations.
