In case nobody could tell from past posts, I really, really love candles. There’s just something about a tiny flickering glow and a sweet fragrance in the air that brings a heightened sense of calm to a room. And we could all use a little more calm in our lives, am I right?
Whether on a coffee table surrounded by a gathering of friends drinking wine and reading bad poetry, resting on a windowsill in the midst of the year’s biggest snowstorm, or acting as the centerpiece for a celebratory dinner, candles have a way of warming up the atmosphere both literally and figuratively. So, needless to say, I get a little irrationally excited when I find a new candle company to support.
I recently realized I’d burned through all but one of my candles and took this as an opportunity (read: excuse) to do some online shopping. In the midst of my browsing, the graceful look and effortless descriptions of Brooklyn Candle Studio’s offerings caught my attention immediately. More often than not, candle labels are a guessing game: what does a “Moonlight Breeze” smell like? Will “Ocean Waters” contain notes of algae and decomposing fish? Has anyone who names these ever been outside? Brooklyn Candle’s Minimalist collection steers clear of that and instead, tells it like it is.
Founded five years ago by an FIT alum with a penchant for aromatherapy, Brooklyn Candle Studio uses eco-friendly soy wax and chemical-free perfume oils to forge each of their pieces. Along with the self-described “balanced typography and vintage botanical engravings” that adorn every label, these candles are thought of as “full sensory experiences.” Take “Japanese Citrus,” with satsuma and yuzu leading the way for softer hints of bergamot and jasmine. It sounds like pure summer in a jar!
With that, my shopping cart is calling, and I must go.
