Two designers known for their sustainable, slow-fashion practices have teamed up to create a cult-followed collaboration. Repurposing scraps of Ace & Jig’s custom woven textiles, Brother Vellies has released this season’s Burkina Slide and Zanzibar Wrap sandals that are just simply everything.
Brother Vellie’s signature Burkina Slide is made using traditional Ethiopian shoe-making techniques, with the upper fabric handwoven in Burkina Faso by a community of female weavers. For the collaboration with Ace & Jig, the shoe-making process was the same: handmade by local artisans with a light-weight, vegetable-tanned leather. All materials are sourced with an environmental consciousness, utilizing byproducts whenever possible. The upper fabrics, however, are remnants from Ace & Jig’s textile collections that are handwoven in India. As part of their No Waste value, Ace & Jig repurpose their excess fabric into scarves, bunting flags, napkins, quilts, and of course, sandals.
New this season is the Zanzibar Wrap sandal featuring Ace & Jig’s spring/summer ‘18 patterns in Fete, Sardinia, Seventies, and Daybreak. The combination of pattern play with the soft, feminine wrap creates the ultimate warm weather shoe, and sends me into a state of euphoria.
While perusing this beautiful collab between two socially conscious designers, don’t forget to check out the Nusa Disc and Nusa Tote both adorned with an Ace & Jig handkerchief. Picnic in paradise, anyone?
