This week in the Lotuff studio, a round of Tripps is beginning its production journey.

As one of our most popular women’s bags, this beauty is getting all dolled up just in time for the holiday season. Shown here in the fabulous and fun electric blue, it also comes in our twelve signature colors. A petite yet highly functional bag, it’s no wonder she has fans all over the world.

The Tripp is one of our most difficult bags to make. That might seem strange given that it’s such a small piece, but it comprises 37 pieces and requires almost 200 steps to put them together.

As a consequence, cutting the pieces for the Tripp is a lengthy and detail-oriented process. The bag is fully leather-lined (and largely unadorned on its exterior surface), signifying that the utmost care must be taken to make sure each cut piece is unblemished. The silver lining is that most of our artisans have been making the Tripp for quite some time now, and all that training means its production—however demanding—has become almost second nature.

Cutting the Tripp begins with laying out the leather hide and inspecting it for any blemishes that are then marked off for avoidance. Then one-by-one a specialty handmade die, comprised of wood and a sharpened steel edge, is laid into place and “clicked” with a press. The result is a piece of leather that’s ready to be matched with its companions to ensure that the grain of each bag will be the same throughout. This particular electric blue hide will give us six bags, with as little of the leather going to waste as possible. Once the pieces find their mates, they’ll be ready to move on to assembly and stitching.
