“Pura vida” perfectly sums up the way Ticos—aka, Costa Ricans—live. While the phrase literally means “pure life,” it takes on a whole new connotation in this country. It can be used to say hello or goodbye, to express that things are good, or to wish someone well. It completely encapsulates the way of life that Ticos embody. Not surprisingly, Costa Rica has been named one of the happiest countries in the world, and for good reason. The residents have a simple, optimistic, and relaxed approach to life. All is well, hakuna matata, pura vida!

The dazzling coastal town of Tamarindo totally exemplifies this saying. From the soft sands to the perfectly crested waves and lush vegetation, this spot is a true oasis. Just to breathe in the air is invigorating. Tamarindo has a subdued hustle-and-bustle during the day but a vibrant nightlife once the sun sets. The streets are lined with unique boutiques and handmade goods. Check out places like Object-Concept Store for one-of-a-kind Central American bags, accessories, and clothing. Be sure to support the locals, too, and purchase a hand-carved mango wood bowl or jewelry made of polished coconut.

Horseback Riding in Tamarindo, Costa Rica

The main road is just a few steps from some of the most popular beach areas, so whenever you get hungry or tired (or a little too burned), you can pop right back. For a stellar meal, head to El Coconut for high quality, fresh seafood. The Diria is a luxe beach resort and hotel that also has fabulous food. If you head a little farther south and visit Playa Avellana, be sure to stop at Lola’s. It may look like a simple beach hut, but the expertly crafted cocktails and cool, shady palms are heaven on earth.
