Flemish architecture in Lille, France

Right on the border where France meets Belgium, Lille is a categorically striking city, and just a few hours here can quickly prove why it’s one of the most-frequented places in France outside of Paris. Because of its historical Flemish ties the majority of Lille’s architecture is 17th-century neoclassical Baroque, and stepping off the train to see these ornate, gold-and-brick façades in person is only one reason it’s worth a stop.

Whether it’s the morning of a week-long visit or the afternoon of a short sojourn, there’s never a bad time of day to stop at Méert, so make this the first stop on the itinerary. Their waffles, known as gaufres, are a regional icon and have been made the same way since the 1850s: oblong and filled with Madagascar vanilla. Just a few steps away is the district of Old Lille, which is full of boutiques and charming buildings that each have a different look but somehow all still fit together.

It’s possibly the prettiest area in all of the city- and to continue the trend of superlatives, Lille is also home to the biggest flea market in all of Europe. It only happens once a year, so plan a stay in early September, and the Braderie de Lille will be in full swing. Vintage clothing, local culinary specialties, and more abound, but even if it’s not late summer, the Marché Couvert de Wazemmes is open year-round and is almost just as good.

Conclude a day well spent with dinner at one of Lille’s best restaurants, like Bloempot. Found in a former carpentry workshop, its dishes are modern, traditionally Flemish, and presented as wonderfully as they taste. Or, for something different, try Elephant Thai over near the main square. As the name suggests, its menu is primarily East Asian, so order a pile of dumplings and noodles while warming up to the cozy décor. Paired with a carafe of wine, it’s a perfect low-key denouement.
