Killarney is one of the most charming towns in all of Ireland. It’s a vibrant little spot that exudes traditional Irish culture and unabashed friendliness. Killarney is full to the brim with history, heritage, and hospitality, and the combination of its beautiful surrounding countryside and the lovable people makes it one of the best-kept treasures of the country. It's full of activities and adventures for people of all interests: the parks, lakes, and mountains make the perfect playground for hiking, horseback riding, boating, fishing, and biking.
One of the ideal places to spend time is in the Killarney National Park. Going early in the morning is the most enjoyable time to do it–the cows will raise their heads from their lazy breakfasts to greet you, and the locals walking their dogs are nothing short of chipper. The forest in the park feels as though it belongs in a fairytale, and it becomes clear why the area is so rich with folklore. You could easily expect a leprechaun to come bounding out of the foliage!
The most breathtaking part of the park is, unquestionably, walking out from the thick brush into the open field at the heart of the park. More likely than not you’ll see little clusters of deer dotting the meadow. Killarney is famed for these creatures; it has the only remaining red deer herd on mainland Ireland.
But even more stunning than the red deer is the view of the mountains across the lake. The sun dances on the slopes, illuminating the countryside like an enchanted tapestry. As you walk closer you can see the mountains jut straight up from the pristine blue lake. It’s reminiscent of time immemorial, and the landscape feels ancient and pure in magical ways.
To get fully immersed in the beauty, you can hike a seven-mile trail through these mountains known as the Gap of Dunloe. To get across the lake, there's a quaint little boat trip that leaves from Ross Castle, right in the National Park. You can hop in a boat with a local tour guide (often accompanied by a jubilant mutt) and get the authentic seaman’s experience.
There’s rich history in the land and water going back thousands of years–from ancient kings and battles, to deserted hillsides after the potato famine. At the start of the Gap of Dunloe is Lord Brandon's Cottage. It’s a clandestine little place to grab a bite of brown bread and a sip of coffee before the trek.
For those looking for a more leisurely experience, horse-drawn carriages are available to jaunt the length of the Gap. The more adventurous person could choose to cycle or walk, but either way, visiting the Gap of Dunloe is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to be sure. It's a place without time, and truly an awe-inspiring way to enfold yourself in nature.
For those who wish to stay save some energy but still seek adventure, horseback riding through the National Park is a great way to see the area and have some fun. The Killarney Riding Stables offer many different tours, ranging from one to three hours, and accommodating all levels of experience. The guides are delightful, and give a great tour of the park. Don’t worry if you’re not a prepared equestrian–helmets and boots are supplied. And most importantly, the horses are incredibly sweet and well cared for.
The open-air activities in Killarney are fabulous, but there’s also a plethora of indoor entertainment. The town is home to the charming Cinema Killarney and world-class spas like that of the Muckross Hotel. Furthermore, there is no shortage of delectable food! From high-end restaurants to down and dirty pubs, there’s something for everyone. The best burger in town by far is at Plan B, and it's made with local Irish beef. And of course, after a great burger, there’s nothing like a great dessert, so pop around to corner to Murphys for mind-blowingly scrumptious local ice cream. It’s handmade just down the peninsula in Dingle, and there’s nothing else like it.
Killarney truly has something for everyone. The history, the culture, the scenery, and the amazing people make it nothing short of wondrous—so carry along our equally wondrous Rho handbag.
