This week in the Lotuff studio our favorite daily carry-all is sitting pretty at the painting stations, having its sides and handles all dolled up.

Here at Lotuff we take pride in our painting process, as it far exceeds the typical standards of quality to which many brands adhere. Other bag-makers merely add layers of paint, one on top of the next, to achieve what initially looks fine, but is the reason why the edge paint peels off down the road. Our mindful and meticulous process, buffs the layers of paint right into the leather itself so that the color and finish won’t ever be lost.

This means our artisans pass pieces between painting and buffing about seven times before the leather fibers can no longer be felt on the edges. A “blind test” is done with a finger to ensure that the painted and buffed edge is silky-smooth to the touch.

I love working alongside my artisanal friends who impress me around every turn on the studio floor. It’s a lovely thing to watch our painters so gracefully glide their brushes along edges, leaving a shiny, silky line of perfection.
