Stitching the Lotuff Leather Bucket Bag

Today in the studio, our run of Bucket Shoulder Bags is being stitched. This unusual yet sophisticated tote will move between the sewing and assembly stations more than once, and the result will eventually be one of the most interesting new styles we have in our collection.

Right now it’s the straps’ turn under the machine. Although these are small pieces in the grand scheme of things, there’s a great amount of precision and attention required to pull them through. It’s all in the colors! Because each side of this bag and its straps is a different complementary hue, the stitching needs to match, and careful maneuvering is the key. Here, the sewing machine’s bobbin has been threaded with a secondary color—ochre—while the top spool contains indigo thread. As a result, these straps have to be stitched using just the right amount of tension: if it’s off, the opposing thread might peek through to the other side.

After each of these straps has been deemed practically perfect in every way, their finishing square knots are hand-tied and turned and burned. This seals the knots right into the leather, and by pushing a bone folder over each one, they’re made invisible. Once the pattern of stitching and assembly is completed for these Bucket Shoulder Bags, they’ll have just a few steps left before they can go out into the world to their new owners.
