This week in our design studio, we’re stitching a group of Knot handbags. Beginning a round of new bags for the first time is always exciting, and seeing them brought one step closer to the finish line is more exciting still. We’re focusing on the front and back covers of the bag today, which are pieces that will subsequently move on to assembly and be attached to their counterparts.
The Knot is one of our largest fully leather-lined handbags, and this fact makes them a little harder to stitch than most. Sewing together two laminated pieces of leather is harder than stitching one unlined piece—besides the obvious increase in thickness, there’s also a higher chance of the leather slipping off the machine because both sides are now smooth. Our artisans need to keep a steady hand and work slowly when making this bag, as even one little stitch out of place can relegate a piece to the sample bin.
Once all of these Knot covers have been stitched, all their finishing knots will be tied by hand and then checked for consistency. Those knots will later be turned-and-burned a few stations over, which ensures that they’ll never loosen or come undone.
