Next up in the studio, we’re stitching the front covers of our most versatile little carry-all. Stitching these pieces readies them to move on to assembly, where their side collars and bottoms will be attached before returning to the sewing machine once more in something of a rhythmic dance.

The Zip-Top Medium Tote is unlined, which makes it slightly easier to stitch than some of its more complicated friends thanks to the less-glossy interior surface. But by no means is it an effortless task: working the machine requires a great deal of precision, and our expert artisans put all their efforts into making everything perfect down to the very last corner. In watching them double a thread back into its hole for reinforcement or stitch an edge by hand, their expertise is clear—as is the love and care put into every intuitive motion.

When stitching is finished on each piece of leather for this tote, a hand-tied knot gets cauterized and, using a bone folder, is pushed back into its hole while still hot. There, the thread seals itself permanently and invisibly inside the leather. This process of turning and burning, as we call it, aids in preserving the bag’s longevity and streamlining its appearance as it accompanies its wearer on all of life’s adventures.

Once the pattern of stitching and assembly is completed for our totes, they’ll be just about ready to make their way out the door and into the world.
